Title 1

Welcome to Title 1 Marion Elementary
 
My name is Leslie Kazee and I am the Title 1 Teacher and Testing Coordinator at Marion Elementary.  I have taught in McDowell County Schools for 24 years.  My husband, Curtis and I live in Marion and have two children.  Our son, Aikman, is currently a junior at East Carolina University and our daughter, Landry, is in 8th grade at West McDowell Middle School.
 
I am passionate about reading and believe that children need a strong foundation in reading to be successful in all areas of school.  I strive to help each child reach their fullest potential.

Title 1 Programs

 

All Title 1 programs in McDowell County use the Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System.

 What is LLI?

The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System (LLI) is a small-group, supplementary intervention program designed for young children who struggle with reading and writing.

Who is LLI for?

LLI is designed to be used with small groups of children who need intensive support to achieve grade-level competency. Participants include low-achieving children who are not receiving another supplementary intervention. English language learners can also benefit from LLI. Each LLI lesson provides specific suggestions for supporting English language learners.

Key Elements:

Lessons across the three systems progress from beginning reading in Kindergarten or Grade 1 (Level A) to beginning reading for Grade 3 (Level N). Supported by Fountas & Pinnell’s Continuum of Literacy Learning, LLI’s lessons include the following:

  • A combination of reading, writing, phonics and word study
  • Emphasis on comprehending strategies
  • Attention to the features of nonfiction and fiction texts
  • Specific work on sounds, letters, and words in activities designed to help children notice the details of written language and learn how words “work”
  • Help for students in expanding their vocabularies
  • Explicit teaching for fluent and phrased reading
  • Opportunities to write about reading to learn a variety of writing strategies
